Scoliosis – what every yoga teacher should know
Scoliosis is a side (lateral) curvature of the spine, usually associated with a twisted appearance on forward bending movements in yoga. Normally the spinal bones are stacked on top of each other to form a column. From the side, there is an inward curve (lordosis) in the low back (lumbar spine) and neck (cervical spine), and an outward curve (kyphosis) in the ribcage region (thoracic spine). These natural curves give the spine is normal spring as we walk and run. From behind, the spine should appear straight, with the small visible bone prominences (spinous processes) lining up vertically. In scoliosis however, the vertical appearance visible from behind changes to form a C curve, and the ribcage appearance is often changed. Continue reading “Out of Line – Chris Norris”

Within two decades, the human infant progresses from barely being able to lift their head from the floor through to an independent adult, able to physically adapt to a vast range of situations.
